Trystan Bates is a Contemporary Visual artist, Curator, and Founding Director of Honeycomb Arts. .

He has for the past sixteen years been developing Honeycomb and his artistic practice while exhibiting internationally in solo and group shows throughout galleries, museums and cultural institutions in the U.S., Latin America and Europe.

His process is interdisciplinary with a focus on hand torn collage that gives a new life to discarded paper sourced through recycling centers that is then painted and carefully torn by hand with tweezers into the multitude of shapes used for each composition. His process is solitary, tedious, methodical and time consuming. The production of each piece is a meditative experience that forces him to slow down to a fraction of the speed at which modern society operates.

Trystan typically works either in miniature format, producing collages under a magnifying glass with hundreds of pieces of paper that are sometimes as small as a pin head, or inversely in a very large scale with pieces that are anywhere from 9m2 to mural size. He appreciates and plays with the concept that the size of a finished piece has a direct effect on a viewers experience and can influence ones physical behavior. Thematically, Trystans' work is centered greatly around the abstraction of folklore, myth, migration and global history. The documentation of memory and the importance of vanishing indigenous culture has also played a significant part in his work.

In 2019, Trystan relocated his studio to Weston Vermont. It is in this green wilderness where he currently lives and works. While continuing to produce his signature collages which he has become known for, Trystan is also working on developing a series of future exhibitions produced specifically for children, translating his two dimensional  art into three dimensional kinetic sculpture and organizing a series of environmental residencies for international artists with a target date of 2021.
